It's a struggle finding help when it's needed most. A Home For Everyone In DeKalb (AHFEID) plays a crucial role in the community's support network. Recently, Sherri McCoy from Blessings Bags of Warmth shared a story on Facebook about a family living in their car who found housing in Decatur, accepting their housing voucher. The only obstacle was the $1,850 deposit.
Michelle, a mother and grandmother, had been living in her car with her family spread among relatives. "This is the first time I ever had to ask for something, and it was devastating. I've always managed things on my own. My daughter encouraged me, as I felt ashamed, but I'm glad I reached out."
She loved her work as a personal shopper at Macy's, but was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. "I have bone-to-bone arthritis in my knee, making it hard to stand and work. Steroid shots didn't help enough, and knee replacements are needed." Unable to continue working, she started looking for work-from-home opportunities to support her two daughters and three grandchildren living with her.
"I'm excited to be in our own place again! Section 8 housing requires an inspection, which took some time. Once passed, I sought resources for the deposit. I tried for a loan, but it didn't work. My 13-year-old daughter stayed with a friend to remain in school."
While applying for disability benefits, Whiting plans to start a small home daycare and cook to earn extra income. "My whole family is excited to move into the apartment, especially my 13-year-old."
Whiting is grateful for AHFEID's budget class. "I learned about separating needs from wants, saving money, eating at home, and building an emergency fund. I understand that now."
"I just want stability for everyone, for everyone to go to school. I'm ready to go home. A friend provided air mattresses, I have quilts, and we'll get our belongings out of storage."
To help furnish their new home, AHFEID is referring Whiting to the Atlanta Furniture Bank for beds and tables.
