Working Together to Address Homelessness in DeKalb County
I am honored to serve on the City of Decatur's Task Force on Homelessness, representing A Home For Everyone In DeKalb and bringing the perspectives of those who experience homelessness every day to the table.
It is encouraging to see such a diverse group of people come together with a shared commitment to addressing this complex issue and improving the network of services and support available to our unhoused neighbors. Importantly, the Task Force includes individuals with lived experience, whose voices and perspectives are essential to developing meaningful solutions.

Two things stand out to me as particularly important as we begin this work. First, we need a better understanding of the current landscape of homelessness in DeKalb County, including the resources available, the gaps in services, and the challenges people face when trying to access help. Second, all 13 cities in DeKalb County must play a role in addressing homelessness. This responsibility cannot fall solely on DeKalb County or the City of Decatur. A regional challenge requires a regional response.
Established by the Decatur City Commission, the Advisory Task Force on Homelessness will examine a range of issues, including homelessness and housing instability, behavioral health and crisis response, supportive services, regional partnerships, community engagement, funding opportunities, and measurable strategies for addressing homelessness.
Over the course of nine months, the Task Force will meet to explore these issues and develop recommendations to present to the City Commission. Reverend Thomas Mitchell serves as Chair, with Kate Brookmeyer as Vice Chair. Angela Threadgill, Assistant City Manager, staffs the Task Force, and consultants from MIG will facilitate the sessions.
I am hopeful that this effort will help strengthen collaboration across DeKalb County and move us toward a more coordinated approach to ensuring that everyone has access to the support and housing they need.
